That is, until this morning, when Senator Schumer announced a federal bill to ban the synthetic substances, which give users a “meth-like” high. As with his Four Loko ban, which alerted citygoers to the “blackout in a can” with just enough time to clean out their bodega’s supply before New Year’s, Chuck Schumer has become our go-to source on the latest alcohol and drug crazes sweeping the nation. Hey, it’s one way to get teenagers involved in politics. The “bath salts,” made of mephedrone and MDPV, are different from the kind you use in the tub. They come in powder and tablet form. They can be snorted, injected, and smoked. And they sound like really bad news. Said Schumer:
“These so-called bath salts contain ingredients that are nothing more than legally sanctioned narcotics, and they are being sold cheaply to all comers, with no questions asked, at store counters around the country.”
