According to Hartford Courant columnist Kevin Rennie, Joe Lieberman, Connecticut’s Democrat-aligned independent senator, will announce tomorrow that he’s not going to run for reelection in 2012. Surely Lieberman will provide some face-saving explanation for why he decided to call it quits more time with family is always a good one but one has to assume that a major part of his decision was his difficulty in figuring out a path forward, either as an independent or as the nominee of either party, that wasn’t likely to end in an embarrassing defeat. A PPP poll in October placed Lieberman’s job approval rating in Connecticut at a measly 31 percent. Two thirds of voters said they would vote to replace him. That was before Lieberman was instrumental in the repeal of “don’t ask, don’t tell,” but he had a lot of ground to make up with Democratic voters.
