The revolutionary foment that’s been spreading across the Middle East won’t be hitting China anytime soon—despite an online call for a “Jasmine Revolution.” On Saturday, the pro-revolution campaign was circulated via Boxun.com, a U.S.-based Chinese-language website. The campaign urged citizens to stage protests in 13 cities, including Beijing and Shanghai, but was quickly quelled by Chinese government officials. At the proposed rally site in Beijing, police detained three people, and in Shanghai, another three people were held. To further prevent anti-government unrest, police have disconnected some mobile phone service, censored Internet postings, and rounded up known activists.
