A GOP proposal for a two-week continuing budget resolution that would cut $4 billion in spending and forestall a government shutdown looming on Friday looks to be picking up steam with both Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and President Obama. Unlike in 1995, when President Clinton got a big political boost from a government shutdown, this time around, by a 29 to 23 margin, more voters would actually blame the Democrats, although a plurality would blame both parties, so it’s no good for anyone. Nevertheless, a continuing resolution would only guarantee that a shutdown doesn’t happen for at least another two weeks. Ultimately, Senate Democrats and House Republicans have to somehow overcome ideological differences and sheer spite for one another to agree on a longer-term budget.
