Bill Monroe, host of Meet the Press from 1975 to 1984, died following complications from hypertension. He was 90. Monroe started as an NBC bureau chief, and worked on the Today show in the sixties, where he won a Peabody Award in 1972. He joined Meet the Press in 1975. Some of his top interviews included Alabama governor George C. Wallace, Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, and President Jimmy Carter, and he was known for his direct and serious interview style. He left NBC in 1986 and went on to edit the Washington Journalism Review and served as the ombudsman for the Defense Department’s Stars and Stripes publication. [NYT]
