New York’s Smoking Ban to Hit the Out-of-Doors

The City Council is slated to approve a new ban on smoking this afternoon that will represent the biggest expansion of Mayor Bloomberg’s anti-smoking laws since the ban on smoking in indoor workplaces and park playgrounds in 2003. The new legislation, which is expected to take effect in 90 days, will affect smoking in “parks, beaches, marinas, boardwalks and pedestrian plazas like Times Square.” Yeah, that’s still not going to make Times Square more inhabitable. But it looks like under-the-awning-outside-a-bar smokers are still safe to light up. Well, safe from Bloomberg. [Metropolis/WSJ]
