About Half of All Cabbies Are Willing to Do Their Jobs

Everyone knows that taxi drivers will often refuse to travel into the outer boroughs — or will even hit you with their cars in rare instances — despite their legal obligation to take passengers anywhere in the city. But just how prevalent the practice had become wasn’t known until the Taxi and Limousine Commission did some undercover work. The numbers: Out of 260 attempts by would-be passengers to get a ride from Manhattan to another borough, only 50 percent were successful. Mayor Bloomberg and members of the City Council are hoping to raise the fines for illegal refusals. [City Room/NYT]
