Members of the hacker group Anonymous have released documents from someone claiming to be a former employee of Bank of America. In the e-mails, which have not been verified, people who seem to be employees of Balboa Insurance, a former subsidiary of Countrywide that Bank of America sold off last month, discuss removing tracking information from loan documents. Although some links are broken, the documents are posted on bankofamericasuck.com and other mirror sites. A representative for Anonymous told Reuters that the documents “relate to the issue of whether Bank of America has improperly foreclosed on homes.” Consumer groups have accused U.S. lenders, including Bank of America, of foreclosing on homes without the proper documentation.
WikiLeaks’ founder, Julian Assange, has threatened to leak damning documents on Bank of America since 2009. And Anonymous has backed WikiLeaks’ mission as far as the free flow of information. But these e-mails date from November 2010. Plus, they don’t exactly amount to a smoking gun. Whether or not the e-mails prove real, it’s clear Bank of America should have expanded its negative-domain-name shopping spree beyond BrianMoynihanSucks.com.
