Man Who Last Won Election in 1987 About to Join Presidential Race

We speak of Buddy Roemer, who served as a Democratic congressman in Louisiana in the eighties before being elected governor in 1987, switching to the GOP in 1991, and then losing his bid for reelection later that year. In other words, January of 1992 was the last time Buddy Roemer held elected office of any kind. Now, nearly two decades later, he has decided to join fellow long shot Herman Cain as the only two people in the presidential race so far.

Former Louisiana Gov. Buddy Roemer will announce Thursday in Baton Rouge that he is forming an exploratory committee, he told POLITICO.

We like the moxie, but the “opponents running over me” thing will most certainly happen. After all, one of the guys who beat Roemer in 1991 was former Ku Klux Klan grand wizard David Duke. Even in Louisiana, that doesn’t exactly speak well to your electability.
