Nine Killed During Second Day of Koran-Burning Protests in Afghanistan

Violent protests in response to Florida pastor Terry Jones burning a Koran have continued in Afghanistan for a second day, with at least nine civilians killed, all from bullet wounds, in Kandahar. One of the dead was a police officer. Kandahar has been the location of previous Taliban insurgencies.

Thousands of men in the city were reportedly “shouting slogans calling for death to Americans and to the Karzai government, setting tires on fire, burning cars and attacking journalists trying to cover the disorder,” according to the New York Times. Shops and businesses have closed, and people are staying off the streets. Many of the protesters were reportedly waving the Taliban flag. An official said rioters attacked a U.S.-funded high school for women.

The protests came a day after a mob overran the United Nations headquarters in Mazar-i-Sharif, killing twelve people, seven of them international staff.
