House Passes Budget Compromise

The shutdown-averting budget compromise that will keep the government running all the way to September 30 was passed by the House this afternoon on a 260–167 vote. Because of defections among Republicans who didn’t feel that the $38.5 billion in cuts were deep enough — actually, the CBO concluded yesterday that only a measly $352 million will be sliced off of the budget this fiscal year — Speaker John Boehner needed Democratic votes to pass the bill. Those votes materialized — after all, this was a bill hammered out by Harry Reid and Barack Obama as well — but according to Politico, Democrats waited until “the final minute” to cast them in order to “milk the crisis facing the GOP.”
