Muammar Qaddafi Would Like to Negotiate Now

Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi spoke on state television Saturday morning, announcing that he’s “ready for a cease-fire” and suggesting that NATO just call off the mission. “Come France, Italy, U.K., America, come we’ll negotiate with you,” Qaddafi said, as NATO warplanes bombed the capital. Libyan rebels and NATO described Qadaffi’s call for a cease-fire as a disingenuous ploy. The speech came as NATO broadens its list of targets in Libya. It also comes months after Qaddafi defied an ultimatum from Western countries demanding a cease-fire, and 42 years after Qaddafi seized authoritarian power and began suppressing his people. [NYT]
