Prosecutors Seek the Death Penalty for Suspected USS Cole Bomber

Military prosecutors have recommended the death penalty for Abd al-Rahim al-Nashir, the man accused of the 2000 bombing of the USS Cole. Al-Nashir has been charged with planning the Cole attack that killed seventeen and injured 47. He’s also been charged with masterminding an aborted attack on the USS The Sullivans. The decision over whether the death penalty will be pursued will be determined by Vice Admiral Bruce McDonald. If it is pursued, the American Civil Liberties Union will likely protest. “All of our concerns about the inherent unfairness of the military commissions are compounded in cases like this one, in which the result could be death,” said Hina Shamsi, director of the ACLU’s National Security Project.
