Herman Cain Is Surging

Former Godfather Pizza CEO Herman Cain, who up until a few weeks ago wasn’t even included in many polls, is now in fifth place in the GOP primary, according to Gallup, which pegs his support at 8 percent, behind Mitt Romney, Sarah Palin, Ron Paul, and Newt Gingrich. What makes this even more impressive is that few people actually know who Cain is, giving him plenty of room for growth. Apparently the voters that do know him are enamored with his business background and appealing lack of political experience, because it’s definitely not his foreign-policy views that are winning them over.

Cain has no opinion on whether we should stay or go in Afghanistan, never heard of the Palestinian “right of return” (a major issue in peace talks) until last Sunday, and just found out that President Obama has, controversially, authorized the assassination of Yemeni terrorist leader and American citizen Anwar al-Awlaki, which was widely reported and debated over a year ago. Foreign policy doesn’t seem like it’ll be a major factor in 2012, but you want to at least sound informed on the issues. Otherwise people will start to question whether experience running a pizza chain really prepares you to run the United States.
