The new electronic traffic signs unveiled by Mayor Bloomberg yesterday will normally display the speed limit (it’s 30 MPH, you’ve probably never reached it in lower Manhattan). But if you drive over 30 MPH, the words “slow down” will appear alongside a skeleton. “The idea is to get people to realize that what they’re doing can kill them or kill somebody else,” Bloomberg explained. “Unless you make it graphic, people don’t get the message.” True enough, but to the most skittish New Yorkers, this crude, cartoonish, highly pixelated skeleton is a little too terrifying.
“They’re crazy. The Department of Transportation is going crazy again on us,” said Bob, who said he doesn’t want to be reminded of his mortality.
