If you haven’t yet heard of the SlutWalking campaign, prepare to read a lot more about the patriarchy than you might have thought. It all started a few months ago in Toronto when a cop named Michael Sanguinetti came to talk to the students at Osgoode Hall Law School about public safety. “You know, I think we’re beating around the bush here,” he began, then followed it up with:
“I’ve been told I’m not supposed to say this — however, women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimised.”
Students who objected to him blaming the victim reappropriated the term for themselves. But rather than just liking or retweeting SlutWalk on Facebook or Twitter, they decided to coalesce a movement around it — probably to do with the the socialism in the tap water. Now, it’s spread to the U.S. like an army of empowerment-seeking zombies. There’s at least a dozen protests planned across the States, including one in New York City in August. No fair counting it as an act of feminism if you just happen to blend in on your walk of shame home.
