New York May Lose Its Six Fancy Lexus Taxis

There are more than 13,000 taxis on the road in New York City, and only six of them are Lexuses. But the six very elite cab drivers may lose their special cars soon, if the Taxi and Limousine Commission removes the cars from the approved cab car list as planned. The commission is making room for all of its “Taxis of Tomorrow,” the Nissan NV200 van that will slowly replace all the taxis currently on the road. The drivers say they should be able to keep their cars — they provide more comfortable rides and alleviate pain for drivers like Neil Newmark, who suffers from a chronic knee problem. Plus, they just like driving the Lexuses. “A cab driver is dying for individuality,” said Newmark. “I sort of feel like a celebrity.”
