As a vote to legalize gay marriage maybe/probably approaches, only one more Republican state senator needs to support marriage equality for the bill to pass, and the pressure is intense on the small number of undecideds. Like Hudson Valley senator Greg Ball, for example, who asked his Twitter followers for help on Friday:
Opening up the discussion! So, if you were me, how would you vote on gay marriage? Yes or No?
So how has it turned out? Ball tells the Observer’s Azi Paybarah today that the responses have been about “a thousand to one” in favor of gay marriage. But since Twitter users are disproportionately young and hip, such results shouldn’t be surprising. If Ball solicited opinions in a bingo hall or a diner at 5 p.m., they would be a thousand to one in the other direction. Further diminishing the importance of the overwhelmingly gay-friendly reaction, Ball points out that most users were not from his district, which is what happens when you ask the entire Internet for opinions. More locally, Ball tells Politico that calls and e-mails to his district office have been about 60–40 against gay marriage.
