With less than two weeks remaining until Ceilingmageddon commences (we’ll have to come up with a better name before then, when we’re not stockpiling canned goods), even Republican voters are starting to get annoyed with the GOP’s unwillingness to budge even a little in order to reach an agreement. To be fair, it looks like Republican senators are getting kind of excited about the Gang of Six’s bi-partisan proposal (although there’s apparently not enough time to put it into legislation and pass it, so … shit). It’s the House GOP that appears hopelessly, ideologically dead set against reaching a deal that doesn’t conform exactly to their terms. But if they think that’s what their constituents want, they’re wrong. According to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll:
There is also growing dissatisfaction among Republicans with the hard-line stance of their congressional representatives: Fifty-eight percent say their leaders are not doing enough to strike a deal, up from 42 percent in March.
So who, then, is the House GOP representing? The tea party. Nearly two thirds of them don’t want the debt ceiling raised at all, even on their terms. The Grand Old Party should just make it official already and change its nickname to the Grand Old Tea Party.
