wet and wild

August Was the Wettest Month Ever in New York

Not just the most rain-filled August, but the single rainiest month in recorded city history, thanks in part to the big, wet kiss that was Tropical Storm Irene. The previous August record was 12.36 inches, which we’d already bested before Irene came along. This makes it the most prestigious of the terrifying weather records this city has set this summer. Sure, July 22 was the hottest July 22 ever. And sure, August 14 might have set the record for the single rainiest day in the city’s history. But plenty of months start strong, only to fizzle. (We’re looking at you, July 2010.) Congrats, August. You saw things through all the way to the wet, bitter end.
