A protest demanding justice for Thursday’s fatal police shooting of 29-year-old Mark Duggan turned into a full-scale riot last night in Tottenham, an area in north London. A crowd of an estimated 300 gathered outside Tottenham’s police station early Saturday evening demanding answers for Duggan’s killing, but within a few hours things had gotten out of hand. Several buildings, a double-decker bus, and two police cars were set ablaze by “youths in masks and hoods,” and police on horse and foot were pelted with objects. The Guardian reports that chants of “we want answers” and “whose streets? Our streets” could be heard coming from the crowd. Though he understood the crowd’s frustration and anger, Duggan’s brother, Shaun Hall, said he could not condone the riots. “Please try to hold it down,” he told Sky News. “Don’t make this a bearing on my brother’s life. My brother was a good man.” The New York Times is reporting that 48 people have been arrested in connection with the violence.
