Mark Sanford Is Gonna Get It Right This Time

On Monday night, former South Carolina governor Mark Sanford’s ongoing journey of personal growth brought him to Piers Morgan’s studio, where he discussed the breakup of his twenty-year marriage in the homespun, romantic way that has become his signature. In between offering up bits of his new philosophy (“I’m gonna worry about the log in my own eye instead of the splinter in someone else’s”) and attempting to quote Seals & Crofts’s “Get Closer,” the man who put the Appalachian Trail on this country’s ever-expanding scandal map repeated what he’s been saying all along: He’s still in love with Maria Belen Chapur, the Argentinean woman for whom he left his wife (and his career, probably). Sure, he wishes he’d done “a whole host” of things differently, but he feels that he now has “more to offer as a human being” than ever before. Oh, Mark Sanford — sometimes we’re almost rooting for you.
