Tim Geithner saved President Obama the trouble of replacing him by announcing that he’d be staying on through the 2012 election earlier today. The Treasury secretary, who is apparently prone to “odd fits of giggling,” had reportedly told the White House he was going to step down after an agreement to raise the debt ceiling was reached. Turns out he won’t be. “Secretary Geithner has let the president know that he plans to stay on in his position at Treasury,” Treasury spokeswoman Jenni LeCompte said in a statement. “He looks forward to the important work ahead on the challenges facing our great country.” Yeah, we’re sure he’s really looking forward to at least another year of having his every decision criticized. A separate statement released by White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said, “The president asked Secretary Geithner to stay on at Treasury and welcomes his decision.”
