Worst Hiking Trip Ever Finally Coming to an End

Josh Fattal and Shane Bauer, two American hikers who have been imprisoned in Iran since 2009, are expected to be freed today, at last, on bail of $500,000. The two dudes and their female companion (who was released from prison in 2010) were, for some reason, hiking in Iraqi Kurdistan near the Iran–Iraq border when they were detained by Iranian border guards. They were charged with espionage and, in a closed-door trial, sentenced to eight years in prison. So why release them now?

Analysts said Ahmadinejad’s announcement was an attempt to improve his international standing ahead of the U.N. General Assembly meeting that starts on Wednesday.

Oh. Well, thanks for letting those weird hikers go, but, uh … everyone still hates you.
