The Gender-Segregating B110 Bus: Busted

Women and men have been segregated on the private-yet-public B110 bus for nearly four decades, but nobody outside Brooklyn’s Hasidic community ever really took notice. Now the secret is out, and it’s not going over well. The Department of Transportation has threatened to shut down the bus if it doesn’t end the policy, the city’s Commission on Human Rights has launched an investigation, and Mayor Bloomberg is pissed. “Private people, you can have a private bus,” he said yesterday. “Go run a bus and do what you want on it. There’s certain limitations. But this is an outrage. We will not permit that with city monies.” This last remark confused us, actually — from what we’ve read, the bus company pays the city, not the other way around. Whatever. Outrage!
