Unsurprisingly, the recent sad picture featuring a horse collapsed on West 54th Street bolstered support for opponents of Central Park’s horse-drawn carriages, which have long been seen as cruel to the animals (not to mention cheesy). Michael Bloomberg, however, seemed baffled by the outcry. “I have no idea what goes through their minds,” he said of those calling for a ban. Really, he can’t “imagine why anybody wants to destroy something that is part of New York’s heritage and that tourists love.” Of course, tourists do always come first. But couldn’t they also learn to love those faux-vintage electric cars? [NYT]
