Despite its title as New York’s official state insect, the nine-spotted ladybug hadn’t been spotted (heh) in the Northeast for decades until a slew of them were found in July on an organic farm in Amagansett. For Cornell professor–ladybug expert John Losey, it was like finding a long-lost sibling. “Everyone is really excited about this,” he says, slightly overestimating the number of people that are actually excited about this.
