New Men’s Record Set in Today’s NYC Marathon

Mutai, the 2011 Boston Marathon winner, won the men's New York Marathon in an unofficial time of two hours, five minutes and five seconds to smash the course record on Sunday. Mutai smashed the old mark of 2:07:43 set by Ethiopia's Tesfaye Jifar in 2001 to defeat runner-up Emmanuel Mutai, the reigning London Marathon champion. Geoffrey Mutai, a 30-year-old Kenyan, won the men’s title in this year’s New York City Marathon, running the race in 2 hours, 7 minutes, and 43 seconds, breaking the race’s decade-long record time. (Mutai also shattered the Boston Marathon record a month ago.) Interestingly, today’s second- and third-place men’s finishes also bested the previous record. On the women’s side, Ethiopia’s Firehiwot Dado finished first with a time of 2 hours, 23 minutes, and 15 seconds. Though Dado didn’t break the record — she was off by less than a minute — there was another record set today: the most people ever to take part in a New York City Marathon, 47,100.
