Mitt Romney Told a Gay Vet He Doesn’t Believe in Gay Marriage

Mitt Romney probably thought that clearly stating his views on gay marriage would win over the old dude wearing a Vietnam Vets hat, who approached him in a New Hampshire diner. But it turns out the 63-year-old vet, Bob Garon, is gay, and had his husband sitting right next to him. Garon asked, pointedly, “If two men get married, apparently a veteran’s spouse would not be entitled to any burial benefits or medical benefits or anything that the serviceman has devoted his time and effort to his country, and you just don’t support equality in terms of same-sex marriage?” Romney repeats his pro-Defense of Marriage Act position several times; Garon continues to press him on what that means in real, human terms; each time the atmosphere gets more and more fraught, which Romney (quite awkwardly) tries to brush away with a smile.
