Newt Gingrich may be be within single digits of Mitt Romney in a recent private poll in South Carolina, after a pro-Gingrich super PAC blanketed the state with ads attacking Romney’s time at Bain Capital, but some recent stumbles in his campaign hint at glaring organizational shortcomings that indicate the candidate may be out of his depth. First he was late to two events in Columbia on Thursday, then failed to show entirely at a barbecue in Duncan on Friday (giving Rick Santorum prime billing); appeared at a Q&A session at a black church on Saturday where none of the microphones seemed to work; flubbed a conference call with voters and reporters because of an invalid dial-in number; and, topping the whole thing off, Gingrich was booed at a Fox News forum hosted by Mike Huckabee when he dared to even mention Romney and Bain Capital.
