Occupy Wall Street took to another New York landmark at 5 p.m. this evening to protest President Obama’s signing of the National Defense Authorization Act at the end of last year. The rush-hour protest marked the culmination of a day of demonstrations against the controversial act that included a stop at the offices of New York senators Kirsten Gillibrand and Charles Schumer. The protest began inside Grand Central Terminal during rush hour, forming what the Daily News termed a flash mob, though the kind without choreographed dancing that ends with smiles.
About a hundred protesters showed up in the terminal’s main concourse to rail against and raise awareness of the controversial act, angered that it codifies the military’s power to indefinitely detain, without trial, U.S. citizens who are deemed suspected terrorists. Obama himself indicated in his signing statement that he has reservations.
According to the MTA, two summonses were issued at the Grand Central protest and three people were arrested for disorderly conduct. Many of the protesters moved to 100 William Street for a meeting afterward.
