The Department of Health gave a group of New York City teenagers $15,000 to make a safe sex ad, so they did it their way. “Teens talk with slang,” said 17-year-old Anthony Murray, who stars in a spot called “Importance of Condoms,” which debuted online today. “We don’t want to sound phony using too much medical terms,” he said. The resulting clip shows a young man advocating “raw dogging,” or having sex without a condom, followed by a long scrolling list of side-effects, including everything from HIV to “dirty dingaling reputation.” They should have known: Adults hate to hear kids speak frankly about sex.
A spokesperson for Republican State Senator Marty Golden called the video “alarming” because it “advocates for safe sex in a roundabout way, and any confusion this ad may cause could be hazardous for the youth population of our city and state.” Democratic Assemblyman Rafael Espinal, meanwhile, admitted that the PSAs “capture the realities of what is happening in inner-city neighborhoods like the ones I represent,” but said the video “shouldn’t be accessible to children under 13” because of “raw” language (his pun, not ours).
It’s not the best ad ever, but if it’s making grown-ups blush, it’s probably speaking clearly to young people.
