Kirsten Gillibrand got Vogue; Christine Quinn gets Elle. The City Council speaker and mayoral candidate was profiled in this month’s issue in what may mark the first time the glossy magazine referenced Staten Island or discussed the issue of trash removal. In fact, trash pickup might have a little something to do with why the profile is so remarkably glowing: The writer, who happens to live in Quinn’s district, mentions that removal hasn’t been so great of late, and Quinn dispatches someone to her street to fix the problem. If she’d promised an immediate rodent task force for a ten-block radius around the writer’s apartment, the whole thing might have been a sonnet.
As stipulated by the ancient bylaws of sitting for a profile in a women’s magazine, Quinn talks about the girly stuff in addition to offering up a light treatment of more serious issues. Her sapphire engagement ring, she reveals, was her affianced’s mother’s — and most of the jewelry she wears is selected by her fiancée Kim, as well. She does her own hair — “It’s rooting terribly, so it’s highly sprayed to cover the gray” — and envies another politician’s better do. Andrew Cuomo, she says, “has good hair. Always good hair.” But she’s less than envious of another male politician’s peacocking. “[Blooomberg] was like, ‘Let me summarize this for the Spanish speakers.’ And I was like, ‘Oh, God, no, don’t speak Spanish!’ ”
