Mitt Romney — a wealthy Mormon financial titan from Massachusetts — admitted earlier this week that Tuesday’s primaries in Mississippi and Alabama are “away games” for him. Romney is not like the South; the South is not like Romney. And yet, because it’s Mitt Romney, he had to make some attempt to awkwardly ingratiate himself to the local electorate while campaigning in Mississippi yesterday. The height of the trees there are way off, obviously, so that’s out. Romney would just have to improvise:
In Mississippi, Romney did try out some Southern charm, telling his audience he was “an unofficial Southerner.”
“I am learning to say y’all and I like grits, and things,” he joked. “Strange things are happening to me.”
Yep, that’s Southerners for you, to a tee. “Hey, Dave. Beautiful day isn’t it? I like grits!” “It sure is Jim. Have a good one. Grits.”
