We don’t know how hard it was or how long it took for Australian Hugh Atkin to make this Eminem-inspired Mitt Romney rap video, in which Mitt Romney is made to rap about himself to the beat of “The Real Slim Shady” — with legitimate rhymes like “Well, I made a lot of money matter of factually/I drive a couple of Cadillacs actually” — but we’re going to guess “very” and “forever.” It’s amazing.
Update: Okay, “forever” turned out to be a bit of an overestimation. But it still wasn’t easy. Atkins, who is currently studying at Oxford, tells us over email that he’s had the idea for the video “for a long while” — he “liked the incongruity of someone as straight-laced as Romney rapping, and it seemed like a light-hearted way to poke fun at some of the sillier things he has said and done during the last two campaigns.” But it wasn’t until recently that he found the time to put it all together.
“I decided to give myself a break from study for a week and see if the video was feasible to make,” he writes. “I compiled a bunch of transcripts of debates, interviews and speeches, wrote a rough draft of some lines I wanted to use and then started playing around with all of the footage I could find. It was slow-going and frustrating work, but I could see after I had done the first few lines that the concept could work. I edited the video on my laptop at my dining room table. The video took a little over a week of full-time work to put together.”
And the world was never the same.
