Hateful 81-year-old evangelist Pat Robertson is not down on the devil’s herb, using his 700 Club platform recently to push for the legalization of marijuana. “If people can go into a liquor store and buy a bottle of alcohol and drink it at home legally, then why do we say that the use of this other substance is somehow criminal?” he reasoned, echoing college dorm powwows across the nation. “I’ve never used marijuana and I don’t intend to, but it’s just one of those things that I think: This war on drugs just hasn’t succeeded.” That said, Robertson added, “I’m not a crusader.”
This is the vile man who has blamed gays, abortion, and feminists for everything from hurricanes to September 11, but he’s just not into jailing nonviolent criminals. Robertson tested the waters on this issue a while back, and now he’s diving in. “If you follow the teaching of Christ, you know that Christ is a compassionate man,” he said. Plus, “I don’t think he was a teetotaler.”
And so Robertson is making some unlikely friends. “I love him, man, I really do,” said the director of Law Enforcement Against Prohibition. “He’s singing my song.” Bob Marley, naturally.
