Last night, some 50 anti-NYPD protesters, clad all in black to deter identification, marched from Astor Place to Tompkins Square Park chanting “NYPD go to hell” (per one tweeter) and, at one point, smashing the windows of a 7-11. Police cars moved in a little after 9 p.m. to close off the park and arrested at least two people in the vicinity for throwing bottles from a rooftop. A nearby Starbucks survived only because “some Mafioso-looking guys came out with big poles and started swinging them,” according to Occupy Wall Street live-caster Tim Pool. While unclear whether the march had any ties to the Occupy movement, whose latest tactic involves sleepovers on city sidewalks (see photo), Pool tentatively linked them to the NYPD-skeptic Anarchist Book Fair being held in the area through today.
