Exactly one year after it was decided that accused 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and his associates would be tried at Guantanamo Bay instead of in New York, and more than nine years after Mohammed’s arrest, the U.S. has announced charges against the five men. They include “terrorism, hijacking aircraft, conspiracy, murder in violation of the law of war, attacking civilians, attacking civilian objects, intentionally causing serious bodily injury, and destruction of property in violation of the law of war” for attacks resulting in the deaths of 2,976 people, according to a Department of Defense statement. The men, also including Walid Muhammad Salih Mubarak Bin ‘Attash, Ramzi Binalshibh, Ali Abdul Aziz Ali, and Mustafa Ahmed Adam al Hawsawi, will be arraigned by a military judge within 30 days and “if convicted, the five accused could be sentenced to death.”
