The entertainment value at last night’s American Society of Magazine Editors awards (the Oscars, if you will, of the magazine industry) was provided by host Brian Williams, who used his impeccable comic stylings to put some shticky material over, and D magazine editor Tim Rogers, who accepted his Best Profile award with an awesome speech (read it here) about the odds of having sex with his wife after the ceremony. Time earned Magazine of the Year honors, Bloomberg Businessweek won for General Excellence for a General-Interest Magazine and New York didn’t do too shabbily either: The magazine won “Ellies,” as they’re known, for Single-Topic Issue (The Encyclopedia of 9/11), Essays and Criticism (Wesley Yang’s “Paper Tigers“), and Magazine Section (“Strategist”), to go with earlier Ellie wins for Website and General Excellence, for a total of five awards. (ASME editors also awarded New York Best Cover for the October 3 issue featuring Lisa Miller’s feature, “Parents of a Certain Age.”)
Other multiple winners this year included:
- The New Yorker, which won two awards for Public Interest (“The Invisible Army“) and Reporting ("The Apostate“).
- Time, which won a Ellie for Utility App to go with Magazine of the Year.
- The New York Times Magazine, which won for Feature Photography (“Vamps, Crooks, and Killers“) and Video ("My Family’s Experiment in Extreme Schooling“).
- Wired, which won two Ellies for Excellence in Digital Reporting and Design.
