Sweden’s Official Twitter Account Is Off the Rails

Today’s Great Moment in Twitter History (see also: Estonia, Drake) comes courtesy of @Sweden, the unpredictable account given front-page treatment in the New York Times today. “If there is anything to be learned from the @Sweden experiment, a government initiative that entrusts the country’s Twitter account to a new citizen every seven days,” the paper reports, “it is that there is no such thing as a typical Swede.” This week’s author, a self-described “27-year-old womanlike human” named Sonja, is taking full advantage of the spotlight.

When I was 19 years old I took my stuff (including my boyfriend) and moved to Gothenburg,” Sonja explains in her bio. “Then I got pregnant two times in a row. Now I’m a single and low educated mother, but at least I don’t do drugs and prostitution.” Today, she insisted, “This @sweden-thing is not an experiment. We have done this for SEVEN MONTHS! We know exactly what we are doing!” Okay!

While past citizen-tweeter topics have ranged from a Christmas moose hunt to masturbation and political opinions, Sonja has a voice all her own. She followed up with notes on not only the sullied name Hitler and sexually abusive dolphins, as seen above, but also the shopping habits of Adam Sandler, the sartorial consequences of feminism, and the rawest parts of motherhood (“WOOOOAH, LOOK AT THIS BIG LUMP IN MY DIARRHEA!!”).

The @Sweden program, known as Curators of Sweden, came about when the Swedish Institute and Visit Sweden, the government tourist agency, sought to develop a plan to present the country to the world on Twitter,” the Times reports, ever-sober. Nice to meet you, Sweden. We really had no idea.
