McCarren Pool Closed Early Over Backflipping Teens

NEW YORK, NY - JUNE 28: A lifeguard keeps watch on opening day of the newly renovated McCarren Park Pool on June 28, 2012 in the Brooklyn borough of New York City. The historic 37,000 square-foot pool had been closed since 1983 but has been rejuvenated by a $50 million restoration. Today is the first day New York City public pools opened for the summer. Yesterday, just one day after the McCarren Park Pool reopened to the public, Williamsburg’s newest summer attraction had to be closed early after a pack high-schoolers proved they are just not responsible enough to handle an Olympic-sized wading area. Bystanders reported (many via Twitter) that when some lifeguards tried to stop the group from doing backflips, the teens turned on them physically, and the pool had to be cleared out.

But for all those hoping for a little fun in the sun today — staring at bearded and tattooed hipsters frolicking in the shallow end — the McCarren Park Pool is expected to open at eleven this morning, as scheduled.
