As dark storm clouds descended upon the shore this past weekend in Seaside Heights, New Jersey, 17-year-old Melanie Rossomando determined she could either jump 35 feet from the stalled chairlift ride above the beach, or risk getting struck by lightning (a fate suffered by a different woman at the Jersey Shore that day). “We freaked out,” Rossomando said. “My friend looked at me and she was like, ‘We have to jump.’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah, yeah. We’re jumping. That’s it, I’m not staying on here. It’s a metal death trap.’”
So she jumped. “Broken leg, broken arm, whatever, that completely beats getting struck by lightning,” she said, although according to a doctor she “wasn’t too badly hurt.” The non-jumping friend’s much less impressive story of survival ended without any injury at all. The video contains some profane language.
