On New Year’s Day 1987, a 19-year-old law firm employee named Linette Torres was stabbed and killed in Sunset Park, her body left in an auto body shop parking lot near the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. DNA Info reports that the NYPD’s Cold Case Squad finally made a breakthrough after dusting off the file, thanks to DNA evidence that linked a former acquaintance of Torres’s boyfriend to the murder — 53-year-old Edwin Alcaide, a man with a long rap sheet that includes a 1978 rape. Police were able to make the identification by running a tissue sampling found under Torres’s fingernails through the state’s DNA database. On Thursday, Police arrested Alcaide, who currently resides at East 10th Street in Manhattan.
