Five Injured in Rucker Park Shooting During Basketball Game

Everyone please just take a deep breath. Five people were shot last night during the Entertainers Basketball Classic at Harlem’s Rucker Park over a dispute that may have been entirely meaningless. “They started arguing, about a bad call or something like that,” witness Rodney Harris told the Daily News. A police source confirmed to DNAinfo that a ref’s call was “possibly what led to it.” Either way, a 16-year-old and four men in their twenties were hit when the gunman started firing. “He pulled a gun out of his pocket and shot once,” said Harris. “He then shot one more time. Everyone started running.”

A video from World Star Hip Hop shows the scene right before the shots ring out, causing the videographer to gasp, “Oh! Oh!” with each one. The shooter then crossed the street and decided to fire a few more times. “Then he just walked away,” Harris said. “He didn’t even run.”

Former New York Knicks point guard Nate Robinson was in attendance but was not hurt. The five victims are all expected to survive.

Over the weekend, a 4-year-old was hit by a stray bullet during a basketball tournament in the Bronx, adding to an already startling year of gun violence in the city. As one witness last night put it to the News, “This summer is crazy.” In a bad way.
