Obviously, it didn’t work out so well, but we appreciate the effort! The New York Times reminds us that August 2 will be the 50th anniversary of the protest held by about 100 architects and lovers of historic buildings in an effort to preserve the old Penn Station. They knew the building would probably still be torn down to make way for Madison Square Garden, but their efforts weren’t for naught. “I really believe Grand Central Terminal was saved because of what happened at Penn Station,” says Peter Samton, an architect who attended the 1962 rally. Spare a thought for the protesters the next time you’re trapped in the city’s dingy, overcrowded basement.
