Dolphin Rescued After Washing Ashore in Far Rockaway Dies [Updated]

Four hours after washing up in Queens, the dolphin (photographed by WNBC-TV producer Shimon Prokupecz) was packed into a rescue truck for its journey to a marine rescue center in Long Island, the Times’ City Room blog reports. The poor creature remained well hydrated while on the beach thanks to our boys in blue, many of whom were on the scene all morning “seeing to it that water [was] being put on the dolphin,” Commissioner Ray Kelly assured worried delphinophiles. But sadly, the dolphin didn’t make it in the end. Riverhead executive director Robert DiGiovanni says the dolphin was likely already sick, and that the barnacles on her fluke “indicate an animal that wasn’t moving very fast.”
