The fallout from Stuyvesant High School’s cheating scandal is spreading. A few months ago, students were suspended for using their smartphones to share answers on Regents exam, and the principal resigned. Now, it looks like there are going to be even more suspensions. DNAinfo reports that after spending their summer vacation looking at the case, the Department of Education wants up 66 more students to pay for cheating on the statewide test.
“As we said at the start of this investigation, we have zero tolerance for cheating or academic dishonesty of any kind, and the students involved in this incident will now face disciplinary action,” a statement from Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott said.
Interim principal Jie Zhang emailed parents of the students involved yesterday, saying: “As a community we must address the issues of student discipline and academic integrity directly: We will not tolerate any acts of academic dishonesty.” We’re guessing that former Stuy students’ continued insistence that this sort of thing happens all the time — while probably honest! — isn’t helping matters.
