Reverend Sun Myung Moon Dies

The self-proclaimed messiah and founder of the Unification Church — best known for conducting mass weddings of “moonies” throughout the sixities, seventies, and eighties — died in Gapyeong, South Korea from complications related to pneumonia. In addition to his attention-grabbing religious enterprise (generally viewed as a cult), Moon was also a business man with substantial commercial interests throughout South Korea, Japan, and the United States, where he owned the conservative Washington Times and the New Yorker Hotel, though information surrounding his income sources and holdings was often unclear. (He was jailed for 18 months in 1982 for tax fraud and obstruction of justice.) Moon also linked to a number of right-wing causes both here and abroad.
