A group of Lower East Side neighborhood organizers wants to limit the alcohol-fueled mayhem in their neighborhood by getting the state to stop issuing liquor licenses there, the New York Times reports. They’re NIMBYs — one organizer got involved when she learned a bar and restaurant wanted open up next door to her — but they’ve got a point about the area their website calls Hell Square. You know if you’ve ever had to navigate the lines and vomit puddles of Essex Street on a Friday night that it’s not the most likely place to get a good night’s sleep.
