Shortly after announcing that he’ll be donating millions to a handful of moderate, pro-gun control candidates over the next three weeks, Mayor Bloomberg revealed part of his plan to influence politics beyond the current election and after he leaves office in 2014. The New York Times reports that Bloomberg is forming a super-PAC, called Independence USA PAC. He’s already named several candidates he’ll support, including former Gov. Angus King, an independent running for the U.S. Senate in Maine, and two candidates who support gun control measures: Democratic State Sen. Gloria Negrete McLeod of California and Republican Rep. Bob Dold of Illinois. It’s also likely that he’ll back efforts to legalize same-sex marriage in Maine and Washington. “This spending sends a clear message that the mayor intends to keep his wallet open after he leaves office to influence national policy around issues like guns, education and marriage equality,” says a top Bloomberg adviser. “If anything, leaving office will free him to do even more.” Enjoy your gigantic sodas while they last, America.
